Pressure Treated Wood Decks

When we build decks near the Gulf of Mexico it often is a pressure-treated deck. What is a pressure-treated deck? A pressure-treated deck uses pressure-treated wood for the pilings, posts, beams, joists, handrails, and the deck boards themselves. Kiln-dried wood goes through a process to make it more resistant to water damage, mold, and insect infestation. It is the go-to wood when building outdoor projects in Galveston County and the entire Gulf Coast.

When you have a pressure-treated deck installed by us you can rest assured that we are using the best material and following all of the code requirements for Galveston Island and all of Galveston County, TX. We have been here since the 1970s and have over time learned the building codes as they come out. Some new construction companies have come here chasing hurricanes and stayed. The building codes in north Arkansas, or Atlanta, GA are not the same as here. So these newer construction companies are learning on your time and money.

If you are looking for a local contractor who knows the building codes and regulations and puts high-value quality workmanship to build your wood deck in Galveston County then give us a call @ (409) 939-2313 or contact us via our website form.

Cedar Wood Decks

In this region of the United States where we don't have a good supply of durable and sustainable hardwoods such as Redwood, the clear choice for an outdoor building material is Western Red Cedar. In the upper Gulf Coast of Texas and more specifically Galveston County you can always find a good supply of Western Red Cedar for any project. Cedar is well suited for outdoor projects. It is naturally resistant to Mold, Insects, and Water Damage. In addition, it tends to be more stable than a typical pine or fir board. It warps less, resists infestation from insects, repeals water and thus rots less, and has a beautiful grain and color. The #1 upgrade on the decking for us is Cedar Decking, handrails, and stairs.

There is one drawback to using cedar and that is that it is a softwood. As long as you understand that it may take a little more care and protection it may be a good choice for a deck that receives limited use. In general, a pressure-treated deck will cost less and take more abuse. Cedar does look better and warps, twists, and curls less, however.

To summarize cedar wood decks are a choice if you are looking for exceptional beauty and using it for small civilized gatherings. If you intend on having a large gathering of beer-drinking hell raisers your best choice in Galveston County, TX would most likely be a well-constructed pressure-treated wood deck.

Exotic Wood Decks

If you want to stand out from the crowd and have an exotic wood deck built for your home may we first suggest an ipe (pronounced “ee-pay”) hardwood deck? This Brazilian wood is famous for being extremely weather-resistant and can last for over 50 years without needing a replacement. If you like deep color this wood is seen as a statement of luxury and when installed and finished it would be a fantastic option for a homeowner looking for nothing but the best.

A second choice is another Brazilian hardwood called Garapa. It also could last as many as 35-45 years and sports a lighter color than Ipe. Garapa is a little less costly than Ipe and is also a wide choice for an exotic wood deck.

Cumaru, also known as Tonka bean or Brazilian teak has less of a pronounced grain pattern and can be one of the least costly of the hardwood options. Cumaru or Brazilian Teak does however have promising weather-resistant characteristics.

Tigerwood has a tight grain pattern and also resists wood rot and insect infestation. The life expectancy for this exotic wood as decking is about 25-35 years and still a fantastic choice for the Galveston Beach House owner who wants the best and can afford it.
